More tears for MySql:

Another good post about MySql's Dual License that has ultimately served to choke them to death.

http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/database-soup/snoracle-mysql-and-the-death-of-duallicensing-35850

So I turned to Marten and asked him "Can you explain in what way dual-licensing is different from shareware?"
As you can imagine, this was not a welcome question, nor was it one which got an answer at that event. Nobody wanted to associate dual-licensing, the province of shiny new startups like MySQL and SugarCRM, with the crusty old tradition of shareware, domain of $25 home user programs from the 80's.

IBM makes hundreds of millions from Linux, Apache and Java despite owning and controlling none of them.

Sun owned and controlled Java, OpenOffice.org, and Solaris, yet failed entirely to make any of these technologies profitable. In fact, IBM made more money from two of them despite controlling neither copyright nor trademark.

Its a good article, with a good kicker at the end:

P.S. I have to say that I'm extremely disappointed in Richard Stallman for defending the proprietary software model to the EC as well.
