Frenchman Coulee

Went climbing again this weekend (a surprise I know)...
A new destination, Frenchman Coulee just outside of Vantage, WA.

Mediocre photos can be found here

Some really neat basalt columns, with very active rock fall. The best climb was "Party In Your Pants" A full 30 meters At 5.8 it was fairly easy, but truly unique because you can hand jam on both the left and right sides of the column at the same time. Yum!

Or.. you could get a job in Mexico...

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/02/25/mexico.mine.ap/index.html
In a statement Friday, Grupo Mexico said it will give the 65 miners -- if they are found alive -- the equivalent of 10 years of their annual salary, or about 750,000 pesos ($75,000). A company spokesman said if the miners are found dead, the families would receive the payment.

Dirty, deadly, backbreaking labor. $7,500 per year.

Windows to the soul (tm)

About 4 years ago I started wearing contacts... And somewhere along the way Bausch and Lomb started putting a tiny little 'BL' on each pair.. Now if you can stop being so damn jaded for a minute and admit that they really are the windows to the soul.. The whole idea of having a trademark on my eye (and by association my soul) is really really disturbing.

Someday someone is going to make free contacts with adspace, and I'm going to have to kill that person.

Fukuyama

Back at ya Grice,
I had heard of Fukuyama's End of History but never read it. I think I'll have to get a copy.

http://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/philosophy/works/us/fukuyama.htm

Both Hegel and Marx believed that the evolution of human societies was not open-ended, but would end when mankind had achieved a form of society that satisfied its deepest and most fundamental longings. Both thinkers thus posited an “end of history”: for Hegel this was the liberal state, while for Marx it was a communist society. This did not mean that the natural cycle of birth, life, and death would end, that important events would no longer happen, or that newspapers reporting them would cease to be published. It meant, rather, that there would be no further progress in the development of underlying principles and institutions, because all of the really big questions had been settled.

Leader

Climbing season is OPEN!
Beautiful trip to Index today with my good friends Lindsey and Ben.
Sunny day, mid 40-50's.
We did Rogers Corner to Breakfast of Champions.

Full photo set here:

This climb was a first for me because it was my first trad lead, and the first time I've ever trusted my life to a cam. With sport climbing or even using nuts it's intuitvely easy to see how you are attached to the rock face.
With cams you are now trusting a mechanical object, and your placement of said object to keep you from having a bad day. It's an experience I highly reccomend, and after my first fall, I think my exact words were: "Oh my god, they fucking work"

Thank you Ray Jardine

Man Attempts Suicide by Crucifixion

HARTLAND, ME — A Hartland man was treated at a Pittsfield hospital after he nailed himself to a cross. The 23-year-old man apparently was trying to commit suicide Thursday evening in his living room, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Somerset County Sheriff Barry DeLong said Monday that no charges will be filed. "There is no crime here," he said.

Police said the man appeared delusional and told them he had been "seeing pictures of God on the computer." He told them he had not seen the hit movie "The Passion of the Christ," which depicts the Crucifixion of Jesus.

Lt. Pierre Boucher said the man took two pieces of wood, nailed them together in the form of a cross and placed them on the floor. He attached a suicide sign to the wood and then proceeded to nail one of his hands to the makeshift cross using a 14-penny nail and a hammer.

"When he realized that he was unable to nail his other hand to the board, he called 911," Boucher said.

It was unclear whether the man was seeking assistance for his injury or help in nailing down his other hand.
...

And now the funny comments:

More than the self-crucifixion, the failure to think this through shows that this man is insane.
Any sane man would be able to at least walk through the steps before hand..
Lets see, going to need some wood, four nails, a hammer... Ok, foot, foot, hand... Hmmm wait a minute..

The other issue is the setting.. living room? Really? What, you want to catch that last episode of Lost? What's worse is I know he had the TV on.
...and now the weather...
This also kind of reminds me of any number of projects I did in grade school while sitting in front of the TV in the living room..
Lets see, going to need some posicle sticks, some construction paper, hot glue, that's going to be messy, better spread out some newspaper.

Climbing fall simulator

Simple simulation of the impact forces involved in climbing.
Kind of poor interface, but interesting to see:

Bush != Republican

It's a long read, but really good. I had made the same point to my father on Saturday, he didn't seem to like it.. And now the pain:

Yet more blimps

I've established a strong record of being pro-blimp in principle, but anti-blimp in reality.
http://www.aerosml.com/main.htm

Seems like every couple weeks now someone else is getting on the blimp bandwaggon.. Seems cool, I agree.. But I just don't see this panning out.. no sale.

Smith Rock

Anyone want to take a trip to Smith Rock, Oregon?
http://www.weather.com/weather/local/97760

I need to swing through Portland to pick up my rope.
Tentatively first good weekend in March.
