Arsenals of Folly
I am reading Arsenals of Folly by Richard Rhodes.. A great read, he won a Pulitzer for an earlier book, so the writing is superb.
In the following quote he is talking about (generally) how we made so many bombs and really lost all sense of reality.
Robert McNamara, for example, visited the Omaha offices of the Joint Strategic Target Planning Staff for a briefing about the U.S. nuclear target list in Feb 1961, shortly after he became secretary of defense. McNamara was curious to compare the targeting-system criteria to a target known to have been destroyed, Hiroshima, burned out by a mass fire after a 15 kiloton bomb, Little Boy, exploded 1900 feet above the city center on 6,aug 1945.
And he found that Hiroshima would now be targeted by Three - 80Kiloton bombs.
